Miss Representation film screening, 7PM, Fisher 135

The Women's Film Series presents Miss Representation, which uncovers a glaring reality we live with every day but often fail to see. In a society where media is the most persuasive force shaping cultural norms, the collective message that our young women and men overwhelmingly receive is that a woman's value and power lie in her youth, beauty, and sexuality rather than her capacity as a leader. Miss Representation exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media's limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful. The screening is free and open to the public. Pop and popcorn will be provided. (To view the event flyer, click here.)

Darryl Roberts--the film's writer, producer, and director--will be available for Q&A after the screening. This event is free and open to the public. (To view the event flyer, click here.)

It's the 1980's, when new wave angst and gender-bending fashion were all the rage. The new kid at school Chance Marquis is out, which makes him the target of the school bully. To deal with this dilemma, Chance turns to the opposite end of the high school spectrum for help. Training Rules film screening, 7PM, Fisher 135

Rene Portland had three training rules during her 26 years coaching basketball at Pennsylvania State University: no drinking, no drugs, and no lesbians. Training Rules examines how a wealthy athletic department, enabled by the silence of a complacent university, allowed talented athletes, thought to be gay, to be dismissed from their college team. The film follows the lawsuit filed in 2006 against Portland and Penn State by student athlete Jennifer Harris. This high profile case ignited the world of women's collegiate sports and inspired discussions sorely needed to help end discrimination based on sexual orientation that pervades all organized sports. This Women's Film Series screening is free and open to the public. Pop and popcorn will be provided. (To view the event flyer, click here.)

Bullied film screening, 8PM, Fisher 135

On average, 68% of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Questioning (GLBTQ) college students are verbally harassed on college campuses each year and 29% are physically harassed. The statistics for middle and high school students are worse: 85% of GLBTQ students are verbally harassed and 40% are physically harassed. Narrated by Jane Lynch, the 40-minute documentary Bullied tells the story of Jamie Nabozny, a Wisconsin student who spent years being victimized by anti-gay bullies before finally filing the lawsuit that led to the first court ruling holding a school accountable for failing to protect a student from bullying and harassment. Please join us for this film screening followed by a discussion of the contemporary climate for GLBTQ students. This event is free and open to the public. Pop and popcorn will be provided.
