Training Rules film screening, 7PM, Fisher 135
Rene Portland had three training rules during her 26 years coaching basketball at Pennsylvania State University: no drinking, no drugs, and no lesbians. Training Rules examines how a wealthy athletic department, enabled by the silence of a complacent university, allowed talented athletes, thought to be gay, to be dismissed from their college team. The film follows the lawsuit filed in 2006 against Portland and Penn State by student athlete Jennifer Harris. This high profile case ignited the world of women's collegiate sports and inspired discussions sorely needed to help end discrimination based on sexual orientation that pervades all organized sports. Narrated by Jane Lynch, the 40-minute documentary Bullied tells the story of Jamie Nabozny, a Wisconsin student who spent years being victimized by anti-gay bullies before finally filing the lawsuit that led to the first court ruling holding a school accountable for failing to protect a student from bullying and harassment.
