Women's Film Series screening, 7 PM, Fisher 139

The inaugural screening of the Women's Film Series will feature two short documentaries followed by a forum discussion about the impact of advertising on our concepts of gender.

Killing Us Softly 3 provides groundbreaking analysis of advertising's depiction of women. In fascinating detail, creator Jean Kilbourne decodes an array of print and television advertisements to reveal a pattern of disturbing and destructive gender stereotypes. Her analysis challenges us to consider the relationship between advertising and broader issues of culture, identity, sexism, and gender violence.

The Strength to Resist: Media's Impact on Women & Girls highlights responses to advertising by girls and young women as well as leading authorities in the fields of psychology, eating disorders, gender studies, violence against women, and media literacy. The film focuses on practical solutions and the best tactics for reclaiming our culture.

Following the films, Dr. Diane Shoos will facilitate a discussion about the documentaries and answer questions from the audience.
